Switching with smart meters

You can switch away and keep your smart meter, but if it's a SMETS1 (first-generation smart meter) it might not be compatible with your new supplier.

So depending on who you switch to, it might become a traditional meter. You'll lose your smart features like automatic meter readings.

OVO SMETS1 smart meters are compatible with the following suppliers:

  • Utilita Energy Limited
  • Co-operative Energy
  • Utility Warehouse
  • Economy Energy
  • Toto Energy
  • E (Gas & Electricity)
  • Spark Energy Supply
  • Eversmart Energy
  • EON Energy
  • Robin Hood Energy
  • Ecotricity
  • Bristol Energy
  • Our Power Energy Supply
  • Octopus Energy

The second generation of smart meters (SMETS2) should allow you to switch supplier without losing smart functionality as it's most likely will be compatible with your new energy supplier.

If your new provider uses exactly the same make of smart meters as your old supplier, you should be able to use your IHD. Your new supplier will have to update it with your new rates before it can show the right information.
