Saving money on energy bills

Here’s a handy list of ways to cut back your energy use and lower your bills:

  • Turn down the thermostat on your heating. Even turning it down by 1°C can save between £85 and £90 a year.

  • Get a smart meter installation for free. Smart meters come with an In-Home Display that lets you keep an eye on your energy use and much more.

  • Take showers rather than baths. Don’t spend hours in the shower, just1 minute less each day could shave £10 a year off your bills.

  • Keep curtains and blinds open during the day to let the sun’s warmth into your home. Close them at night to keep the heat in and the cold out.

  • Dry clothes on an outdoor clothes line or on an indoor airer rather than using a tumble dryer.

  • Keep the fridge door closed – opening it once can let up to ¼ of the cold air escape.

  • Don’t overfill your kettle, boiling exactly the amount you need could save up to £7 a year on electricity.

  • Switch to new, energy-efficient light bulbs.

  • Use a cold cycle in your washing machine – it should work just as well as a hot wash.

  • Upgrade to OVO Beyond which translates your smart-meter data into useful ‘Zero In’ energy-saving insights. We’ll email these to you every month so you can work on shrinking your bills.
